Semantic Segmentation

Every pixel accounted for — no gaps, no overlaps

Semantic segmentation assigns a class to every pixel in the frame. It is the most demanding annotation type and the one that pays back hardest in scene-understanding models — autonomous driving, agriculture, medical imaging and satellite analysis all live on it.

Pixel work is where cheap labelling falls apart

Segmentation is slow, and slow work is where under-trained annotators cut corners: rough boundaries, unlabelled slivers between classes, sky bleeding into buildings.

Our segmentation pod is a specialist team, not general labellers. Boundaries are cut at zoom, and an automated pass flags every unlabelled pixel before delivery.

What is semantic segmentation?

Semantic segmentation partitions an image into regions where each pixel carries a class label — road, sidewalk, vehicle, vegetation, sky — without distinguishing individual instances.

If you also need each object separated as its own entity, that is panoptic or instance segmentation, which we deliver from the same pipeline.

Semantic Segmentation annotated example

Where it's used

Built for real production pipelines

01

Autonomous driving & ADAS

Drivable surface, lane, curb and obstacle classes at full scene coverage.

02

Satellite & aerial mapping

Land use, water bodies, rooftops and road networks.

03

Precision agriculture

Crop, soil and weed separation for spray-targeting models.

04

Retail & warehouse robotics

Floor, shelf, obstacle and free-space segmentation.

Drivable surface mapping

Every pixel assigned to road, sidewalk, vegetation, building or sky. Curb lines are held to the pixel so lane-keeping models learn a real boundary, not an approximation.

Agricultural field survey

Aerial imagery segmented into crop, water, bare soil and access tracks so yield models can measure area per class instead of guessing from bounding shapes.

Samples are representative of delivered work; client-identifying frames are replaced under NDA.

How we work

A spec, a pilot, then volume — in that order

Most labelling projects fail on ambiguity, not effort. We remove the ambiguity first, prove it on a pilot, and only then scale throughput.

Start with a free pilot
  1. 1

    Lock the ontology

We turn your class list into an unambiguous written spec with visual examples for every edge case.

  2. 2

    Pilot & calibrate

A small batch is annotated blind by two specialists and compared pixel-for-pixel.

  3. 3

    Production

Daily throughput with per-batch QA reports so you can track quality as it lands.

  4. 4

    Delivery

Masks plus overlay previews so review takes minutes, not hours.

Quality control

  • Zero-unlabelled-pixel validation
  • Boundary precision review
  • Ontology conformance check
  • Blind re-annotation on 5% sample

What you receive

  • Indexed PNG masks
  • COCO panoptic JSON
  • Class colour map + ontology doc
  • Overlay QA previews

Tools we work in

  • CVAT
  • Segments.ai
  • Label Studio
  • Client tooling

This is for you if…

AV and robotics teams needing scene-level understanding

Geospatial analytics companies processing imagery at scale

Research groups with a strict class ontology to honour

Every project runs under NDA with access-controlled workstations. Data is deleted on request after delivery.

Why teams switch

You have three options. Only one of them scales.

Hire in-house

  • 6–10 weeks to recruit and train
  • Fixed salary cost at variable volume
  • QA falls on your ML engineers

Random freelancers

  • Every batch looks slightly different
  • No written spec, no review pass
  • Disappear mid-project

Genius Clipping Path

  • Dedicated pod trained on your written spec
  • Two-pass QA on every single batch
  • Pay per unit — scale up or pause anytime

Semantic Segmentation FAQs

Pricing, guidelines, security, rework and export formats — the answers teams usually ask for on the first call.

Why is segmentation priced per image, not per object?+

Because cost tracks scene complexity, not object count. We quote per image after seeing a sample of your real frames.

Can you do panoptic segmentation?+

Yes — semantic classes plus separated instances, delivered as COCO panoptic.

How do you handle ambiguous boundaries like shadows or glass?+

They go into the spec during calibration and get a documented rule, so the whole dataset treats them the same way.

Can we run a free pilot before committing?+

Yes. Send 50–100 representative images and we label them free against your guideline draft, usually within 24 hours, so you can measure quality on your own data before any invoice.

How do you handle our annotation guidelines?+

You can send an existing spec or start from a call. We turn it into a written guideline with edge-case examples, get your sign-off, and every annotator is trained and tested against it.

What happens if labels come back wrong?+

Rework is free. Flag the batch within 7 days of delivery, we correct the affected items and update the guideline so the same error class does not repeat.

How do you keep our data secure?+

NDAs on request, access-controlled workstations, no personal devices or external storage, project-scoped access per annotator, and permanent deletion after delivery when you ask for it.

Which export formats do you deliver?+

COCO JSON, YOLO txt, Pascal VOC XML, KITTI, CSV, or masks as PNG. If you use a custom schema or a platform like Labelbox, CVAT, or V7, we deliver straight into it.

How fast can you scale up?+

A dedicated pod starts at 3 annotators and scales to 100+ within about a week, with a QA lead assigned to your project throughout so quality holds as volume grows.

How does billing work?+

Pay per unit with volume tiers, or a fixed monthly dedicated-pod rate. You get an itemised invoice per batch, no setup fee, and no minimum contract on pay-per-unit work.

Still unsure? Ask us anything — we reply within one hour on business days.
